Good Fortune

Carried by sixty chapters

In the constellation

Good fortune is the oracle's basic favorable verdict — most often as "brings good fortune." In the philosophy of the Great Treatise it is not blind luck but the visible sign of accord between a person's conduct and the demands of the time: as Wilhelm summarizes, in human affairs "the condition of harmony assures good fortune, that of disharmony predicates misfortune." Good fortune and Misfortune are, in the Great Treatise's phrase, the images of gain and loss.

Because the outcome follows from the attitude, the oracle repeatedly ties good fortune to a condition — "Perseverance brings good fortune," "Quiet perseverance brings good fortune," modesty, sincerity, holding to the center. It is therefore less a prediction than a promise contingent on right conduct: align with the time and with what is correct, and good fortune follows of itself.
