Return

Carried by ten chapters

In the constellation

Return (Chinese fu) is the turning point: the moment when, after decline has run its course, the light quietly re-enters and a new cycle begins. It is the title-theme of hexagram 24, whose Judgment describes the gentle, lawful rhythm of renewal:

To and fro goes the way.
On the seventh day comes return.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go.

The commentary marks the reversal:

After a time of decay comes the turning point. The powerful light that has been banished returns.

Return is not forced but follows "the course of nature": the single new line comes of itself, as day follows the longest night. Because the movement is natural and unhurried, the theme counsels gentle encouragement of the new beginning rather than violent effort — the same wisdom that governs Duration and the reading of The Time.
