The shelf behind the site

A short list, deliberately. Each of these earns its place.

This is the expanded version of the list on the About page. It is short on purpose: a reading list that fits in one sitting gets read. Links go to the books' plain product pages; nothing here is an affiliate link.

The text itself

  • The I Ching, or Book of ChangesTranslated by Richard Wilhelm and Cary F. Baynes

The translation this whole site is built on: the full text, the Ten Wings material woven into the commentary, and Jung’s famous foreword. If you buy one book from this page, this is the one.

The Taoist stream

  • Tao Te ChingLao Tzu

The other great watercourse book. Chapter 8 — the highest good is like water — could stand as this site’s epigraph.

  • Chuang Tzu: Basic WritingsTranslated by Burton Watson

The laughing side of the tradition: parables, cooks who never sharpen their knives, and useful trees left uncut.

  • Tao: The Watercourse WayAlan Watts

Watts’s last book and his clearest statement of wu wei — a good bridge if the classical texts feel far away.

Reading the primary text needs no companion volume: start with a chapter that names a situation you are in — the indexsorts them three ways — and let the book teach its own vocabulary, withthe glossary for the terms it leans on.
